Solid Wood Bumblebee Nesting Box for Your Garden

Want to boost pollination and increase your garden yields naturally? This all-wood bumblebee nesting box is an excellent choice for hobby growers, non-beekeepers, and families with children. Bumblebees are exceptionally hard-working and generally non-aggressive pollinators – moreover, they forage even in cooler, windy, or drizzly weather when honey bees are less active. By placing a bumblebee nesting box, you will support fruit and vegetable set, help biodiversity, and create a safe spot where you can observe the life of pollinators up close with respect for nature.

Solid Construction for Stable Temperature

The body of the nesting box is made from solid spruce wood with a wall thickness of 25 mm, which helps maintain a more even microclimate inside. Rain protection is provided by a waterproof plywood roof (2.1 cm) with a generous 4 cm overhang on each side, plus insulation from 2 cm polystyrene. Waterproof plywood legs (0.9 cm) raise the nesting box above the ground and help reduce the effects of ground moisture.

An Entrance That Makes Sense to Bumblebees, and Effective Ventilation

For comfortable approach, the nesting box is fitted with a removable landing platform (wooden block 60 × 30 mm). This connects to a 40 cm long black flexible entrance tube with an inner diameter of 21.5 mm, which mimics the natural access tunnel that bumblebees seek out (such as abandoned rodent burrows). A stable internal environment is supported by a ventilation hole with a diameter of 5–5.5 cm that can be closed. Protection is provided by a triple barrier: an outer metal mesh, Uhelon 53S fabric, and an inner metal screen. For easy cleaning after the season, the inner screens can simply be unscrewed.

Recommendations for Setting Up the Nesting Box and Pest Protection

To help a new bumblebee colony settle in quickly, we recommend filling the interior space (25 × 25 × 25 cm) approximately two-thirds full with natural cotton or sheep's wool. As a very useful accessory, we recommend purchasing a protective entrance flap, which only a bumblebee is strong enough to lift. It helps prevent the intrusion of pests and unwanted visitors such as wax moths, cuckoo bumblebees, hoverflies, or Brachycoma flies, keeping the nest safe throughout the season.
