Formidol is a proven reserved veterinary medicinal product for honey bee colony health care, available without a veterinary prescription. Formic acid evaporation boards help beekeepers in the prevention and control of varroosis caused by the Varroa destructor mite and are also used for nosemosis. The product is suitable for use from spring to autumn, depending on the current condition of the colony, the disease situation, and the manufacturer's recommended methodology. For good efficacy, it is usually applied repeatedly, typically 3 to 4 times per year.

The active ingredient of Formidol is 85% formic acid, which is among the long-established substances used in the fight against the Varroa destructor mite. Varroosis is one of the most serious problems in modern beekeeping, and its timely control is particularly important for rearing a strong and viable winter generation of bees. The advantage of formic acid is its natural origin and the fact that, when used correctly, it leaves no undesirable residues in honey or beeswax. At the same time, no resistance development has been demonstrated in mites or microorganisms. In addition to controlling varroosis, Formidol can also help in suppressing nosemosis and chalkbrood.
The product originates from the Bee Research Institute in Dol near Libčice nad Vltavou. The name Formidol was derived from formic acid (formic acid) and the place of development. The evaporation boards are designed so that the formic acid is released gradually, preventing the colony from being exposed to a sudden intense evaporation. Each board is provided with a double wrapper. After removing the outer wrapper, the board remains in a regulating wrapper with openings that slows down the initial evaporation phase. After several days, once the bees have become accustomed to the presence of the vapors, the regulating wrapper is removed and the board can act with its full evaporation surface.
Formidol is particularly suitable for summer and autumn treatment of bee colonies. When working with the product, it is necessary to take into account the outdoor temperature, the strength of the colony, and the current traffic at the hive entrance. If daytime temperatures exceed 25 °C, do not place the boards into the hive or remove the regulating wrapper during midday hours. It is preferable to apply the treatment in the morning or evening, when the colony is calmer and temperatures are lower. Since the product contains concentrated formic acid, it is a corrosive substance. Always use appropriate protective equipment when handling, especially chemical-resistant gloves and safety goggles, and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
