Honey Refractometer KING – Precise Honey Ripeness Control

Proper moisture content is essential for beekeepers – it determines whether honey remains stable long-term and free from the risk of fermentation. The KING Refractometer is an improved optical instrument for fast and reliable measurement that shows the moisture content and sugar concentration (Brix) within seconds. This allows you to easily verify that you are extracting honey at the right time and that it meets the standard requirements for quality honey.

What Sets the KING Apart from Standard Refractometers

The KING model was designed with an emphasis on greater durability for everyday use in the honey house and in the field. Compared to standard models (e.g. Catania), it offers practical improvements:

  • More Durable Cover Plate: The PMMA cover plate better withstands scratching and common chemical exposure. The viewing window thus stays clear longer and the scale remains easy to read.
  • Protected Calibration: The calibration screw is located on the underside of the instrument, reducing the risk of accidental miscalibration during handling and also helping to protect the refractometer from water ingress during cleaning.

Reliable Results Thanks to ATC

The refractometer is equipped with Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC), which minimizes the effect of ambient temperature on the measurement result. This is appreciated when working in the honey house or in the field, where temperatures may fluctuate slightly. For the most accurate measurement, it is recommended that both the sample and the instrument be at approximately 20 °C (68 °F).

°Bx-BRIX - % Mas Sacch - sugar meter - this scale allows you to read the weight percentage of sugar concentration in water. It measures sugar and water in %. Brix/ATC scale range 58 - 92 %. Water scale 12 - 26 % (1 division = 0.5°). Measurement accuracy is 0.1 %

How the Measurement Works

Operation is simple and fast: apply a few drops of well-stirred honey onto the prism, close the cover plate, and look toward the light. On the scale you can immediately read:

  • Moisture content in % (range 12–26 %)
  • Brix sugar content (range 58–92 %)

Tip: After measurement, clean the prism with lukewarm water and a soft cloth to prevent honey residue from drying on. The instrument is supplied pre-calibrated. Calibration solution is not included in the package (available for purchase separately).

Important Maintenance Notice

The refractometer is a precision optical instrument and deserves careful handling. After each measurement, rinse the prism with lukewarm water, gently wipe and dry with a soft cloth. Do not rinse the instrument under running water and do not submerge it – water could enter the optical components. The refractometer is factory-calibrated. Calibration fluid is not included in the package; however, for regular use you typically do not need it right from the start.

Operating Instructions

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

  1. Preparation: Point the front end of the refractometer toward a bright light source and rotate the eyepiece focusing ring until the scale is clearly visible.

  2. Measurement: Open the cover plate and clean the measuring surface with a piece of soft cotton flannel. Apply 1–2 drops of the solution to be measured. Close the cover plate and press it down gently, then read the boundary line between light and shadow on the corresponding scale. The reading is the numerical value of the measured liquid.

  3. After Measurement: Clean the measuring surface and cover plate with a damp piece of gauze and store the instrument carefully.

CAUTIONS AND MAINTENANCE

  1. The setting for the zero liquid and the sample should be carried out at the same temperature. If the temperature changes significantly, the zero point should be reset once every 30 minutes.

  2. After use, do not wash the instrument with water to prevent water from entering the interior of the instrument.

  3. This is a precision optical instrument. Handle it gently and take good care of it. Do not touch or scratch the optical surface. Store it in a dry, clean and non-corrosive environment to prevent the surface from becoming mouldy or foggy. Avoid strong impacts during transport.

  4. If users operate the instrument in accordance with the stated directions for use, the optical performance should not change.

TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION

The reference temperature is 20 °C (68 °F). During operation, the temperature should be adjusted according to the correction table.

Models marked ATC are equipped with Automatic Temperature Compensation. They have an additional function that allows the user to focus on the measurement without worrying about temperature. The compensation range is 0~30 °C (32~86 °F).
