Phacelia (Latin name Phacelia tanacetifolia) is a very attractive plant for bees. It is an annual herb approximately 70-80 cm tall and is cultivated mainly as a honey plant for bees and as green manure.
Lacy phacelia (lat. Phacelia tanacetifolia) is one of the most sought-after honey plants and holds a firm place in bee pastures. It is an annual herb growing approximately 70–80 cm tall, which during blooming offers lavender-blue flowers literally covered with pollinators. Originally from California, it has been successfully cultivated in Europe since the 19th century. It belongs to the Boraginaceae family and blooms in abundant, dense clusters composed of many small flowers with high nectar production.
Lacy phacelia is a proven choice wherever you want to boost the nectar and pollen supply around your apiary during the blooming period. When sown near hives, it provides bees with a stable food source, which typically shows in the condition of the colonies and in the honey yield. The nectar tends to be high in sugar content, and phacelia also produces distinctive dark blue pollen that bees collect readily. The estimated yield is approximately 2–5 kg of honey per 1 are (100 m²). In practice, it can help bridge nectar flow gaps, especially during the summer period.
Besides its beekeeping use, lacy phacelia is also valued as a green manure crop. It germinates quickly, has a short growing season, and forms a dense stand that suppresses weed growth while also helping to protect the soil from overheating and drying out. Its root system contributes to improving soil structure, which benefits both gardens and fields. Thanks to its hardiness, it is also suitable for higher altitudes.
Sow after the risk of heavy frost has passed, ideally into warm soil. Sowing is most commonly done from April to June. Work the seeds into the soil to a depth of approximately 1–2 cm. Lacy phacelia prefers a sunny location – in shade, both blooming and nectar production tend to be weaker. Flowers typically appear from June to September depending on the sowing date. For sowing 1 hectare, allow approximately 12–17 kg of seed.
