Liebig evaporators consist of a formic acid vial and absorbent
washers mainly made of pure cellulose. Principle published by Dr. Gerhard Liebig.
The Liebig-type volatile substance evaporator is a well-thought-out yet structurally simple device for the controlled and gradual release of liquid treatments into the hive space. It is designed with an emphasis on safe handling and stable evaporation, making it appreciated by beekeepers who want to maintain control over the application and achieve an even distribution of volatile substances throughout the hive.
The greatest advantage of the system is its precision, simplicity, and independence from single-use solutions. The beekeeper can continuously monitor the liquid level in the bottle, easily check the progress of evaporation, and adjust or terminate the process at any time as needed.
Easy placement in the hive: Installation is quick and requires no complicated modifications to supers or frames.
Safer handling of the treatment liquid: The bottle and dropper design minimizes direct contact with the applied liquid during use.
Adjustable evaporation rate: Perforated wicks allow the output to be adapted to current temperatures, colony strength, and the size of the space in the super.
Reusable: The durable construction is designed for long-term use across multiple beekeeping seasons.
The evaporator works on the principle of gravity-fed dispensing followed by evaporation from a large wick surface area. Liquid from the inverted bottle gradually drips through the dropper onto an absorbent paper wick placed in the grooves of the base plate. The substance then naturally evaporates from the wick surface into the hive space. The evaporation rate is controlled by the size of the active wick area – this can be easily adjusted by leaving or trimming a portion of the wick along the perforation lines.

Instructions for use
The evaporator is usually placed in an empty super above the top bars of the frames so that the vapors can spread evenly throughout the hive. During application, always take the outdoor temperature into account and ensure adequate ventilation (e.g., by leaving the hive entrance open as needed and conditions permit).
Warning: When working with volatile substances and chemical treatments, always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific treatment product. Use protective equipment (gloves, goggles), work in a well-ventilated area, and keep out of reach of children.
