Sulfur wicks used for cleaning hives during so-called sulfur fumigation. With the help of these wicks, which are used in a sulfur fumigation lamp.
Proper storage of comb and cleanliness of beekeeping equipment are key to ensuring that bee colonies enter the next season in good condition. Sulfur wicks represent a proven method for keeping supers, frames, and other equipment hygienically clean while protecting valuable comb during storage.
Fumigation is not just "end-of-season cleaning," but primarily prevention. When the wicks burn, sulfur smoke is produced, which helps suppress mold and unwanted microorganisms. For practical purposes, however, the most important aspect is protecting comb from the wax moth – regular treatment can reliably eliminate its larvae and adults, saving you much work and losses in comb.
You can also use sulfur wicks for cleaning supers, storage spaces, and selected containers or equipment used in honey handling (where this treatment method is appropriate).
The package includes paper strips with a sulfur coating. Use is simple: hang the wick on a wire in a sulfur lamp and ignite. Allow to act in an enclosed space (e.g., comb storage cabinet, stack of supers) for at least 1 hour, ideally 2 or more hours for greater effect. Repeat treatment at intervals corresponding to the wax moth's developmental cycle to ensure long-term reliable protection of comb.
During burning, sulfur dioxide (CAS 7446-09-05) is released, which is toxic. Work only in a well-ventilated area or outdoors and use appropriate protective equipment (goggles/face shield, gloves). Keep out of reach of children.
R-phrases: R-23 (Toxic by inhalation), R-34 (Causes burns).
S-phrases: S1/2 (Keep locked up and out of reach of children), S26 (In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice), S45 (In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately).
