ApiDana® BienenFrei – Spray for Calmer Work with Bees (300 ml)
Want to simplify and speed up your work at the hives while staying safe – even without lighting a smoker? ApiDana® BienenFrei is a practical helper for modern beekeepers. It works as a "liquid smoker" and also as personal protection support. Thanks to a blend of essential oils, it helps gently calm bees without harming the colony when used correctly, and can make handling easier during routine inspections.
Why Choose Spray Instead of a Smoker
The smoker is a proven classic, but its preparation takes time and on hot days or during dry periods it can pose unnecessary risk. ApiDana® BienenFrei doesn't create heat, so it's suitable even at locations with higher fire risk (e.g., near forests or during prolonged drought). It's ready immediately – no fuel, no waiting, no burning down. Just apply and continue working. Plus, it leaves a more pleasant scent than smoke.
Three Main Ways to Use in the Apiary
1. Personal protection against stings: Before working at hives, you can lightly spray hands with a thin layer of spray. Essential oils create a gentle scent barrier that may reduce bees' tendency to sting hands – suitable especially during short inspections when you don't want to reach for gloves.
2. Calming the colony during inspection: The principle resembles working with smoke, just in a gentler form. Apply 1–2 short sprays from approximately 50–60 cm distance toward the open hive above the brood area. After a brief reaction, bees will retreat into the spaces between combs, making calmer manipulation of frames easier.
3. Quick limitation of bee robbing: When robbing starts at the apiary or feed or honey spills, immediate action is needed. By spraying the affected area (or entrance reducer), you cover attractive scent trails and can significantly limit the influx of "robber bees."
Practical Use Outside the Hives Too
The spray can also be useful in the garden. Due to its composition, it also repels other insects – helps keep wasps away from seating areas and can be useful when working in grass around the apiary where there's higher tick occurrence.
Composition and Safety
ApiDana® BienenFrei is based on natural essential oils (e.g., clove oil, star anise, citronella, geraniol). When used correctly, it's considered gentle for bees, but always follow recommended dosage and application procedure. This is a flammable aerosol in a pressurized container – store out of reach of children and do not expose to temperatures above 50°C.
