Balakryl Dixol Hive Paint: Safe and Durable Protection for Your Hives

The water-based thin-layer wood stain Balakryl Dixol is a practical choice for routine maintenance of hives and other wooden parts of the apiary. It dries quickly, is easy to work with, and thanks to its EN 71 certification (safety of toys and children's furniture), once cured it is suitable even where health safety is important.

What You'll Appreciate When Painting Hives

The wood stain penetrates into the wood and creates protection that helps limit moisture ingress while still allowing the wood to "breathe." This reduces the risk of warping and cracking, which is important for hives not only for the longevity of the supers but also for maintaining a stable microclimate inside the hive. The surface retains a matte, natural decorative appearance. Another advantage is easy renovation – the finish typically does not peel, so when refreshing the coating, it is usually sufficient to clean the hives and recoat them without lengthy sanding.

Coating Lifespan in Practice

With proper application procedure, the realistic lifespan under our conditions is approximately 3 years. The actual durability is influenced by the location of the apiary site, orientation to cardinal directions, intensity of sunlight, rain, and overall weather exposure. For hives in open and more exposed locations, regular inspection of the coating and timely maintenance is recommended.

Uses Beyond the Apiary

Balakryl Dixol can be used for both new and renovation coatings on hardwood and softwood in both exterior and interior applications. In addition to hives, it is suitable for fences, gable ends, doors, soffits, garden furniture, pergolas, wood cladding, log cabins, cottages, and other wooden structures around the homestead.

Simple Application Without Solvents

Stir the wood stain thoroughly before use. Apply it undiluted onto a clean and prepared surface – the wood should be dry, sanded, and free of wax, grease, and resin residues. For new wood, 2–3 coats are usually recommended at intervals of 1–2 hours; for renovation, 1–2 coats are typically sufficient. For exterior surfaces subject to higher stress, it is advisable to first apply the fungicidal BALAKRYL WOOD IMPREGNATION. Between coats, you can lightly sand the surface with fine sandpaper for better adhesion. The temperature of both the substrate and the surroundings should not drop below 10 °C. A major advantage is cleanup after work – brushes and rollers can simply be washed with water immediately after painting.
