Formidol 2 Evaporation Boards for Veterinary Use – Gentle Protection for Bee Colonies

Looking for a proven way to support the health of your bee colonies and effectively address the most common problems in the hive? Formidol 2 Evaporation Boards for Veterinary Use is an over-the-counter reserved veterinary medicinal product designed for use in beekeeping. It was developed by experts at the Bee Research Institute in Dol and utilizes the action of formic acid, which has been well-established in beekeeping practice for many years. The product is used for the control of varroosis, nosemosis, and chalkbrood. It can be applied from spring to autumn, typically 3 to 4 times per year depending on the condition of the colony, the disease situation, and the manufacturer's instructions.

Advantages of Formidol in Bee Colony Care

No Risk of Resistance Development: The active substance of the product is formic acid, which acts through evaporation. The vapors target the Varroa destructor mite as well as other unwanted microorganisms in the hive environment. Thanks to this mode of action, mites do not develop resistance as they do with some synthetic acaricides, which is why Formidol remains a reliable part of beekeeping practice even with repeated use.

Gentle on Honey and Beeswax: Formic acid is an organic substance naturally occurring in nature and in small amounts also in honey. When used correctly according to the instructions, it does not burden bee products with unwanted residues of synthetic medications. Formidol is therefore a suitable choice for beekeepers who place emphasis on the purity of honey, beeswax, and the entire honeycomb.

Action Within the Hive Environment: Formidol does not only help in controlling varroosis. Formic acid vapors also act against fungal spores involved in chalkbrood and help limit the development of nosemosis. A properly carried out application thus contributes to better colony condition, vitality, and readiness for the next part of the season as well as overwintering.

Controlled Evaporation for Safer Application

Formic acid is highly effective, but for safe use in a bee colony it is important to regulate the rate of its evaporation. Too rapid a release could stress the bees, while too weak an evaporation might not achieve the desired effect. Formidol therefore uses a double regulatory wrapper. After removing the first layer, the board remains protected by a second wrapper with precisely made openings that slow down the initial evaporation. After several days, according to the instructions, the regulatory wrapper is removed and the board can act more evenly and over a longer period in the next phase.

Recommendations for Proper Use

Each board contains 40 ml of 85% formic acid, which is why the product is classified as a Corrosive substance. Always use appropriate protective equipment when handling, especially gloves and eye protection. Correct timing of application is also important. If daytime temperatures exceed 25 °C during the summer period, do not insert the boards or remove the regulatory wrapper during midday hours when the bees are actively fanning. Application in the morning or early evening is more suitable, when the colony is calmer and traffic at the hive entrance is lower.
