Queen Excluder DE – Metal 500 × 500 mm

Wire metal queen excluder measuring 500 × 500 mm is a proven tool for separating the brood chamber from the honey super. It reliably prevents the queen from passing into the honey super, so she remains in the brood chamber and does not lay eggs in the honey super combs. The excluder mesh is designed so that worker bees can pass through without difficulty, while the queen (and usually drones as well) remain below the excluder. Metal wire excluders are valued by beekeepers for their excellent bee passage and long lifespan. For proper function, we recommend not placing the excluder directly on the top bars, but leaving a "bee space" beneath it for free bee movement. The excluder wires should be oriented parallel to the frame top bars. This is a type of excluder particularly popular in Germany, and we recommend this version from the Mellarius supplier.

Main Benefits for Beekeepers and Meeting Your Needs

The goal is clean honey without brood contamination in honey super combs – and this is exactly what the queen excluder serves. Thanks to the metal construction, you avoid problems typical of some plastic excluders (warping, cracking, or deformation). The wire excluder is dimensionally stable, very durable, and will last many seasons under normal operation. Smooth wires facilitate worker bee passage and reduce the risk of injury when passing through, so the colony works more smoothly even during heavy nectar flow. Maintenance is also practical – the excluder can be easily cleaned of wax and propolis mechanically, or it can be boiled.

Practical Tips and Recommendations for Proper Use

For trouble-free operation, maintain the so-called bee space. If you insert the excluder into a frame (or install it so it's not "tight" against the top bars), you'll reduce bee crushing and improve passage between the brood chamber and honey super. Proper orientation is also important: run the wires parallel to the frame top bars. Bees then better "read" the excluder, pass through it more smoothly, and operations in the supers are calmer. With Mellarius excluders, you'll appreciate the precision of spacing, which doesn't change with use – giving you high confidence that the queen won't penetrate into the honey super.
