A solar wax melter is a traditional beekeeping tool for simple and economical harvesting of beeswax using only sunlight – without any external heat source. It melts wax from frames as well as comb and represents an environmentally friendly solution. We offer several variants made from different materials, including models with stands. For best performance, correctly orient the melter toward the sun; the melted wax flows into a removable mold and, once cooled, can be easily removed. Please note that the wax temperature can reach up to 110 °C.

Solar wax melters: gentle comb melting without electricity

Solar wax melters are among the most popular tools for processing beeswax directly at the apiary. They use solar energy and the greenhouse effect for gradual melting of wax from drawn combs, wild comb, drone comb and comb residues after honey extraction. Without gas, without steam, and with minimal supervision, you obtain wax suitable for further cleaning, casting, candle making, or as raw material for foundation (according to the practices and rules of your beekeeping operation).

Why choose a solar wax melter

If you process wax continuously during the season or when discarding old comb, a solar wax melter saves both time and costs. Compared to boiling pots and steam methods, it stands out for its simplicity and gentle treatment of wax.

  • No operating costs – energy is provided by the sun, with no electricity or gas consumption.

  • Gentle melting – slow heating reduces the risk of overheating and helps preserve the characteristic aroma of wax.

  • Cleaner result – impurities (cocoons, pollen residues, and propolis) remain on the sieve or in the comb waste.

  • Minimal supervision – load it, set it in the sun, and only check the collection container occasionally.

  • Suitable for frames as well – higher temperatures may contribute to better hygiene, though this is not guaranteed sterilization.

How a solar wax melter works

The principle is the greenhouse effect. An insulated box with a glazed (or polycarbonate) lid accumulates heat and retains it inside. Wax placed on a grate or mesh begins to soften and melt, then flows down an inclined surface through a filter into a collection tray. Comb residues remain separated, making the wax easier to further purify.

What is most commonly melted in a solar melter

  • Cappings from uncapping – usually the cleanest and most valuable wax.

  • Drone comb and construction frames – ideal during regular comb renewal.

  • Wild comb and trimmings – quick processing of small pieces of material.

  • Older drawn combs – melting is possible, the wax is usually darker and often requires subsequent remelting/filtration.

Types of solar wax melters

Wooden solar wax melters

A classic choice with excellent insulating properties. Wooden melters heat up quickly and, with proper surface treatment, withstand weather conditions well. They are suitable for hobby beekeepers and smaller operations.

Metal and stainless steel melters

If you want maximum durability and easy cleaning, choose metal or stainless steel. Stainless components are easy to maintain, do not absorb odors, and withstand intensive seasonal use over the long term. On some models, a dark exterior surface helps improve heat absorption.

Melters with adjustable orientation toward the sun

Models with stands or adjustable tilt make it easier to “track” the sun during the day. In practice, this means a longer melting time and better use of sunny hours, especially outside the hottest part of the season.

How to choose the right melter size

Choose the size according to the number of colonies, the amount of comb being discarded, and the frame size you use. The more frames you want to melt at once, the more you will appreciate a larger loading area and collection container.

  • Compact melters (1–2 frames) – a space-saving option for small apiaries and occasional melting.

  • Medium-sized melters (4–6 frames) – a practical choice for regular comb renewal during the season.

  • Large-capacity melters – for larger operations where wax is processed in bigger batches after honey harvest.

Recommended method of use

  1. Prepare the material – let cappings drain, and if necessary break combs into smaller pieces.

  2. Place the comb on the grate/mesh – wax must have a free path to drain, while impurities remain on top.

  3. Position the melter in the sun – ideally facing south/southeast, in a shaded-free and sheltered location.

  4. Check the outflow and container – with larger batches, the collection container may need to be replaced.

  5. Allow the wax to solidify – once cooled, remove the wax block and further clean it if needed.

Tips for higher yield

Practical tip: Adjust the tilt so that the sun’s rays strike the glazing as perpendicularly as possible. When melting older combs, keep in mind that some wax remains absorbed in the cocoons – higher yields can then be achieved through subsequent remelting and filtration (e.g. through cloth) or by pressing.

Maintenance and safety

For consistent performance, keep the glazing clean and regularly remove cocoon residues from the mesh. The interior of the melter can become very hot – use gloves and place the melter on a stable surface out of reach of children. If you process material containing honey residues, the scent may attract bees and wasps; keeping the area clean and ensuring a well-fitting lid helps.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is a solar wax melter suitable for old black comb?

Yes, it can be processed. However, be aware that with very old comb the wax is usually darker and some of it remains trapped in the cocoons. For everyday practice, solar melting works very well; for more demanding extraction, it is often supplemented by subsequent remelting and filtration.

Can a solar wax melter be used in cooler weather?

The best results are achieved in direct sunlight and higher outdoor temperatures. In spring and autumn the melter works, but more slowly; in winter its efficiency is generally low.

Choose a solar wax melter that matches the size of your apiary and process your own wax simply, cleanly, and without unnecessary costs.
