Hand-Operated Foundation Mill with Cell Pattern Rollers

The hand-operated foundation mill consists of two main parts and represents a revolution in your beekeeping practice. With this robust machine, hand production of beeswax foundation sheets is very easy, smooth, and intuitive. Gain complete independence – you will never have to purchase foundation sheets again, saving you considerable financial resources, and you can also offer quality foundation sheets to your fellow beekeeper friends. Your investment in this equipment can therefore pay for itself very quickly.

One of the greatest benefits for every beekeeper is 100% assurance of health safety. Through your own production, you ensure a closed cycle of pure beeswax and eliminate the risk of introducing diseases (e.g., American foulbrood) from foreign wax. You also have 100% certainty of composition, free from paraffin or stearin additives, which guarantees that your foundation sheets will be beautifully flexible, pliable, and that bees will draw them out into virgin comb much more willingly and quickly.

Robust Construction and Easy Handling

This hand-operated foundation mill with cell pattern is a heavy cast iron machine designed for long service life. The high-quality cast iron body ensures perfect stability and durability during long-term use in your beekeeping workshop. The foundation embossing rollers are made of aluminum alloy on a steel core (or alternatively from high-quality steel), which guarantees their precision and ensures that this equipment will last in your apiary for generations, right down to your grandchildren.

A major advantage of the mills we offer is the above-standard roller diameter of 73–74 mm. Thanks to this diameter, the mill is much easier to operate and the wax rolls through more smoothly. Competing mills often have a diameter of only around 30 mm, or even 14 mm. While this saves manufacturers on materials, working with such a machine is much more strenuous for the beekeeper and the results are of lower quality. Operation with our crank handle and gear wheels is smooth and requires minimal effort. The crank handle can also be easily removed for maintenance or storage.

How to Mill Foundation Sheets Correctly

Production begins with the preparation of wax sheets, which we recommend warming in warm water before milling so they soften and remain pliable. Do not forget to sterilize the wax beforehand by boiling at 117 °C (243 °F) for a minimum of one hour. During the actual milling process, the rollers must be coated or sprinkled with a release agent to prevent the wax from sticking. You can use, for example, whey, a spring emulsion, a baby soap emulsion, or a dilute honey solution. Thanks to precision adjustment screws, the thickness of the wax foundation sheets can be regulated to tenths of a millimeter precisely according to your needs.

For the best results, the wet wax sheets are first passed through a smooth roller mill to a thickness of 0.8 to 1.0 mm, and then this strip is passed through the cell-pattern embossing mill, where the final foundation sheet with embossed cells of standard size is formed. Thicker foundation sheets (1.0 to 1.3 mm) can also be produced, which make comb building even easier for the bees. The finished strips with embossed cells are then cut to the required frame dimensions (e.g., 39×24 cm, Langstroth, and others).
