Why is an entrance guard so important for bees?

During the wintering period, bees are clustered in a winter cluster and have only limited possibilities to defend the hive. This is when the greatest risk can appear in the form of rodents. A mouse in the hive can destroy the work, contaminate the space and especially repeatedly disturb the bees – thereby endangering the entire colony. This guard creates an effective barrier against pest intrusion, while still keeping the entrance passable for necessary ventilation.
