Entrance Guard – Security Against Pests During Wintering Period
Give your bee colony peaceful wintering without unnecessary stress. The entrance guard made of galvanized sheet metal (screen) is among the basic hive equipment for autumn and winter. Its task is to prevent the intrusion of rodents – most commonly mice and shrews – into the hive space. They can cause great damage in winter: they damage the comb, contaminate the hive, eat up stores, and with constant disturbance disrupt the winter cluster. Bees then consume more feed, maintain heat poorly, and the risk of exhaustion and health complications increases.
Why the Entrance Guard Pays Off
A quality metal entrance guard is a simple investment that will show in the strength and condition of bee colonies in spring. Compared to plastic variants, galvanized sheet metal offers significantly higher durability – rodents cannot gnaw through it. Openings with a height of 8 mm are designed to allow bees smooth operation and hive ventilation, while simultaneously creating an effective barrier against small pests. From practice, it is recommended to install the guard after feeding, when bees gradually reduce flight activity and rodents, on the contrary, intensively search for a warm place with stores.
Variable Dimensions and Quick Installation
The guard is also practical thanks to easy adjustment. The standard length of 500 mm suits most common hive configurations (e.g., Langstroth, Czechoslovak, Optimal). If you have a shorter entrance, simply shorten the screen with sheet metal scissors. Three heights are available (26, 31, and 42 mm), so you can easily match it with the groove in the bottom board or attach it in front of the entrance (e.g., using spacers or screws) according to the hive construction.
